From April 18 to August 25, Prada Aoyama Tokyo opens its doors to the public for the exhibition “Satellites”, the result of the collaboration between Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn and Japanese video creator Hideo Kojima. The project, realized with the support of the Prada Foundation and conceived by the creative studio by NWR, occupies the top floor of the building designed by Herzog & de Meuron.
Satellites represents a new artistic synergy between Refn and Kojima, a dialogue that spans over ten years of shared reflections and intellectual affinities. The project goes beyond the limits of verbal and individual communication, building a common ground made of connected imageries and universal visual languages. In an era in which digital technologies blur the boundaries between media, this exhibition anticipates a possible creative space in which cinema and video games converge.
The installation, inspired by the atmosphere of film sets, welcomes visitors with suspended images that portray Refn and Kojima in an intimate and reflective dialogue on the profound meaning of human connection. The symbolic concept of the satellite – orbiting entities that approach without ever touching – becomes a metaphor for the relationship between the two authors and their creative universes.
The theme of connection, central to both, is expressed in the videogame worlds imagined by Kojima, in which the interaction between people and territories redefines the multiplayer experience, as well as in Refn's cinematic narratives, where emotions and thoughts intertwine beyond the limits of reality.
Both artists share the vision of a future in which the languages of cinema and video games are increasingly integrated, to the point of converging in a common digital ecosystem, capable of generating new forms of experience, both individual and collective. An evolution that could redefine the boundaries between the two worlds, opening up new scenarios for contemporary creativity.
