The Ferrari 250 LM, chassis number 05893, which won the historic 24 1965 Hours of Le Mans, sold at auction yesterday for a record value for the model – €34,9 million. The car, driven by Masten Gregory and Jochen Rindt for the North American Racing Team (NART), scored the Maranello marque’s sixth consecutive victory at Le Mans in 1965 and was the last Ferrari to triumph at La Sarthe for 58 years, until its return to the top step of the French podium with the 499P in 2023.
The 250 LM was originally powered by a 12-liter V3.0, but later cars, including this one, received a 3.3-liter engine. After its 1965 victory at Le Mans, this Ferrari raced in two more editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and four editions of the 24 Hours of Daytona. It also made an appearance at the 1966 New York Auto Show. The car was acquired by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum in 1972 from collector Kirk F. White.
This important car was on display at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum for over fifty years, from 1970 to the present, before being offered for sale by RM Sotheby's at Retromobile, Paris.
