La Italian boating grew 3 times compared to the national GDP from 2012 to 2022 and its impact is 2.7 times the direct economic impact and 6 times the employment impact. This was revealed by the Altagamma-Deloitte study Pleasure boating in Italy illustrated today by Giovanna Vitelli, Vice President of Altagamma for the Nautical sector and President of the Azimut|Benetti Group and by Tommaso Nastasi, Senior Partner of Deloitte, in the presence of Matteo Lunelli, President of Altagamma.
This is the first staudio that frames the economic and employment impact of boating in Italy, a global leading country in the production of yachts over 24 metres, considering both shipbuilding and nautical tourism. In fact, the analysis takes into consideration both the activities upstream of the delivery of the vessel - construction of new units, refits and extraordinary maintenance - and the subsequent use (downstream) and the benefits generated by the permanent or seasonal presence along the coasts of the country.
Numbers
In detail: pleasure boating represents a strategic pillar for Italy, with an overall impactor approximately €27.7 billion e 157.000 employed, activating the complementary supply chains of tourism and Made in Italyy, with a total economic multiplier effect of almost 2.7 times and an implicit employment effect of 6.0 times.
High-end boating – i.e. large yachts over 18 meters – it is the segment that records the most significant spillover effect on the territory. Some numbers: represents the 65% of the total economic impact (which amounts to €27,7 billion), with 80% of the upstream value (shipbuilding). Furthermore, despite consisting only in approximately 2% of the fleet visiting Italy, it generates 55% dand the downstream value, i.e. deriving from the use of the boats. Spending on the territory of a large yacht is 26 times higher than the average, only 6.5% of superyachts (>24m) adopt the Italian flag.
Declarations
“The analysis shows not only the relevance of the Italian nautical industry,” he highlighted Giovanna Vitelli vice president of Altagamma for the sector Nautico e President of the Azimut Benetti Group “but also the unexpressed potential of a sector with considerable margins for growth: despite Italy being the world leader in the construction of Superyachts, only 6% of these fly the Italian flag. This inhibits the beneficial effect that Superyachts are able to generate on the territory. For this reason it is necessary to intervene to increase the attractiveness of the Italian flag, of charters on our coasts, assimilating VAT to hotel activity, as well as of our marinas, true destinations for nautical tourism".
“Pleasure boating is a strategic sector for Italy both for its economic contribution and for the spillover onto other Made in Italy and tourism chains. Greater valorisation of the service chain and nautical tourism can generate important repercussions for the Italian economy", he states Tommaso Nastasi, Senior Partner of Deloitte Italy.
