American Airlines will purchase 20 models of the airliners in the US Supersonic boom to carry passengers from London to New York in three hours.
Overture was designed by Sonic Boom to transport 65-80 passengers at a speed of Mach 1,7 over water, which is double that of today's fastest commercial aircraft, with a range of 4.250 nautical miles (over 6.800 Km).
America Airlines is the largest airline in the world. Boom Supersonic's 20 Overture supersonic aircraft will set a further record for the company. Boom expects to complete the final design for Overture by 2025 and is aiming for 2029 for the first commercial flights.
"Looking ahead, supersonic travel will be an important part of our ability to offer innovative services to our customers," explains the Chief Financial Officer Derek Kerr. boom states that the plane Overture will carry up to 80 passengers.
Although American Airlines and Boom have not yet released an estimate of the cost of tickets, Boom said the Overture was designed to be 75% less expensive for carriers than the Concorde and workable for airlines with business-class equivalent tickets. As supersonic aircraft consume far more fuel per passenger than regular commercial flights, it is hoped that the ability to run the Overture jet on sustainable aviation fuel or a mix of fuels will mitigate environmental costs.
The prototype is not yet a real physical aircraft, at the moment it remains a concept, but boom produced a small two-seat test aircraft called the XB-1 that could begin test flights in late 2022.
Last July boom announced the final production project of Overture, which should kick off in 2025 to carry the first passengers in the 2029.
Besides boom, several companies are trying to revitalize this technology. To create a supersonic aircraft capable of breaking the sound barrier with a less loud sonic boom, Virgin Galactic has partnered with Rolls-Royce since 2020.
