Essilor Luxottica and Politecnico di Milano they teamed up to create the first 'Smart eyewear Lab', a joint research center that will arise within the future Gasometri Park, innovation district which is rising in the area of Bovisa.
The project involves an investment of over 50 million euro and the use of over 100 researchers, will have the goal of researching and developing for the next generation of connected eyewear, integrating digital technologies with bioengineering, physics of matter and AI skills.
The project was presented this morning inAula magna of the Milan Polytechnic in the presence of the rector Ferruccio Stay, of the president and ceo of Essilor Luxottica, Francesco Milleri, of the mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala and the councilor for education, university, research, innovation and simplification of the Lombardy region, Fabrizio Sala. In video link, also the minister for technological innovation and digital transition, Vittorio Colao.
“We are putting the digital foundation stone of something very important. We regret not having our president Leonardo Del Vecchio here because we talk about the topics he was most fond of: innovation, digital technology and change ", comments the president and CEO of Essilux and Francesco Milleri.
Essilor Luxottica together with the Politecnico di Milano “Begins to lay the foundations for a research center that will focus on core technologies. Components that will enable something new: we like to call them smart glasses to remember the world we come from. But they will be something much more and different, ”he observes Milleri, underlining that this "is a challenge that can change our group, the country and can help change the world". These smart glasses, continues the CEO, “will be a bridge to a world that we still struggle to fully understand: the Metaverse, augmented reality, are something we are imagining but very few know fully. This world will be created by the interaction between people and this interaction will be possible when the technologies, which we are starting to study here, will be easily usable by everyone ”. From this point of view, “we are talking about the future not only of our group, but of our country and perhaps even beyond this dimension”.
A project that will allow the development of technologies and services using a widely used and commonly used interface such as glasses. The main objective will be the definition of basic technologies from the hardware and software and application point of view to allow humans to interact with the metaverse.
