The BMW group offers, for the first time in history, a car capable of changing color thanks to a simple touch on the display of a smartphone: a kind of car double face which changes the colors of its bodywork gradually passing from black to white.
The technology behind this innovative mechanism is e-ink, the electronic ink designed for e - readers (such as Amazon's Kindle), which in this case was applied to the bodywork of the new BMW; By accessing the dedicated app, just select the desired color and the car will transform itself in a few seconds.
"The surface coating" explains the German house "contains tens of millions of microcapsules, as large as the thickness of a human hair. Each of these microcapsules in turn contains negatively charged white pigments and positively charged black pigments: the stimulation of an electric field is enough to collect the pigments of the right color, giving the body the desired shade ".
This innovation could also have an ecological impact e green according to BMW, as it will certainly affect the energy efficiency of vehicles.
“A white surface reflects much more sunlight than a black one,” adds a spokesperson. “As a result, the heating of the vehicle and passenger compartment due to strong sunlight and high outside temperatures can be reduced by changing the exterior to a light color”.
